Lawrence D. 'Larry' Chanda, 68
Lawrence D. "Larry" Chanda, 68, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at his home in East Jordan.
As a family man, he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend to
many.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Lighthouse Missionary Church in East Jordan. Pastor James Jordan will officiate with interment following at Sunset Hill Cemetery in East Jordan.
He was born on Jan. 19, 1936, in the Bohemian settlement near East Jordan, the son of Albert and Harriet (Chaddock) Chanda. He grew up in the settlement where, for nine years, he attended a country school. He then attended the East Jordan High School and graduated in 1953.
On April 25, 1959, in East Jordan, he married Eleanor Raymond. Shortly thereafter, Larry served in the United States Army from 1959 to 1961 in Germany.
Larry worked 36 years for Dura in East Jordan and retired in 1997.
He had been very active in his community. He also was highly competitive. He had been a coach for the East Jordan Little League programs, basketball programs and football programs. Larry served on the East Jordan School Board for 20 years and retired in 2003. He also served on the South Arm Zoning Board and the board of directors for the East Jordan Family Health Center.
Larry was a member of the American Legion Rebec-Hosler-Sweet Post No. 227 in East Jordan, the National Rifle Association and was a volunteer for the East Jordan Care and Share Food Pantry. Larry had been a longtime deer hunter.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Chanda, of East Jordan; two sons, Jeffrey (Celeste) Chanda of Charlevoix and Todd (Yvonne) Chanda of Neenah, Wis.; four grandchildren, Clare, Michael, Philip and Jacob; and five siblings, Jennie Valencourt of Burnips, Albert (Dee) Chanda Jr. of East Jordan, Marjorie (Kenneth) Timmer of Muskegon, Richard (Brenda) Chan-
da of East Jordan and Linda (Steve) Poole of East Jordan; one sister-in-law, Joyce Chanda, of Mackinaw City; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Jerome Chanda; and one brother-in-law, John Valencourt.
The family will receive friends 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the Penzien Funeral Homes Inc., in East Jordan.
