Obituary

  Herbert Marshall Griffin, 93, of East Jordan, died on Thursday, January 19, 2023, at Grandvue Medical Care Facility.

  He was born on August 12, 1929, in East Jordan, the son of Marshall Joseph and Charlotte  Elizabeth (Gothro) Griffin.  He graduated from East Jordan High School in 1947. 

  On December 23, 1950, in Boyne City, Herb married Betty Lou McNeal.

  From 1951 to 1953, he served in the Airborne Division of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

  He then worked for the United States Post Office15 years as a clerk and 16 years as Route Driver.  He retired in 1988.

  Herb was Cub Scout Master for 2 years in East Jordan from 1958 to 1960; East Jordan “Father of the Year” in 1966-67; a Trustee of the Jordan Valley District Library from 1986 to 1992; served on the Family Independence Agency Board from 1996 to 2004; coached Little League Baseball in East Jordan; served 18 years on the East Jordan School Board from 1977 until 1995; served on the Board of Directors at Grandvue Medical Care Facility for 9 years from 1995 to 2004; served on the East Jordan Planning Commission for 4 years and Appeals Board for 3 years.  He was a member of the East Jordan United Methodist Church.  Herb enjoyed woodworking, gardening, hunting and fishing.

  Herb is survived by his wife, Betty Griffin of East Jordan; three sons, Bryan (Leila) Griffin of Petoskey, Bruce (Brenda) Griffin of St. Louis, Missouri and Ben (Kimberly) Griffin of Hartland; six grandsons, Christopher, Parker, Sean, Evan, Riley and Cameron; one granddaughter, Logan; and one great grandson, Wesley.  He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Turnipseed and Doris Ingalls.

  Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 23, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, 201 Fourth Street, East Jordan.  Rev. Karen Harriman will officiate.  A graveside service will be held in the spring.

  The family will receive friends on Monday at church from 10:00 A.M. until service time.  Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church, 201 4th St, East Jordan, MI 49727 or Grandvue Medical Care Facility, 1728 S. Peninsula Road, East Jordan, Michigan.  The family was served by the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc., East Jordan.
