Walter 'Butch' Goebel, Jr. 70
Walter "Butch" Goebel, Jr., 70, lost his battle with ALS Thursday, June 13,2013, at home in East Jordan surrounded by his loving family. His family takes comfort knowing he is now mowing, farming, boating, tinkering with his tools and fixing things.
He was born Dec. 10, 1942, in Charlevoix, and is the son of Walter P., Sr. and Dolores (Sheridan) Goebel.
On Feb. 9,1974, in East Jordan, he married Marilyn J. Bennett. He graduated from East Jordan High School in 1960 and served in the U.S. Navy.
Butch had a career that spanned 42 years with EJ Co., formally known as East Jordan Iron Works, where, through hard work and achievement, he went from a position in the maintenance department to becoming facilities manager before his retirement in 2009.
Butch loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and was an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Jordan.
Butch is survived by his wife, Marilyn J. Goebel, of East Jordan; four children, Tracee C. Goebel of Redondo Beach, Calif, Nichole S. (Matthew) Imel of East Jordan, Jennifer C. (Bryan)
Banfield of East Jordan and Joseph W Goebel of Chicago, III.; four grandchildren, Garrett, Miles and Oliver Imel and Adia Banfield; his parents, Walter P., Sr. and Dolores Goebel, of East Jordan: two sisters, Cathy (Dale) Everett of East Jordan, and Patty (Roger) Sutton of Apache Junction,
Ariz.; two brothers, Robert (Barbara) Goebel of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Bay Harbor, and Timothy (Peggy) Goebel of Williamsburg, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Walter Goebel III.
The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Jordan with Rev. Kenneth Lein officiating. lnterment will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery,
East Jordan. The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today, Monday, June 17, at the Penzien Funeral Homes Inc., in East Jordan.
Memorials may be given to Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Jordan or Hospice of Little Traverse Bay.
