Bernard 'Bill' Sturgell, 90
Bernard 'Bill' Sturgell, 90, of East Jordan, died Wednesday, Oct 29, 2014, at Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan.
Bill born March 5, 1924, in East Jordan, the son of Gilbert and Minnie (Vermillion) Sturgell. He graduated from East Jordan High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the South Pacific Theatre.
On April 4, 1946, in Boyne City, he married Helen M. Munson.
Bill worked 15 years for E.J. & Southern Railroad until closure in 1962. Following that, he worked as an agent in R.A. Campbell Insurance Agency in East Jordan until his retirement in 1986.
Playing golf was an important part of Bill's life and he frequently enjoyed a bad round of golf.
He was a member of East Jordan United Methodist Church, American Legion Rebec-Hosler-Sweet Post No. 227 in East Jordan, past member of East Jordan Rotary Club as well as past member of the East Jordan Lions Club. He also was active in Charlevoix Masonic Lodge No. 282 F & AM and served as worshipful master.
Bill is survived by his wife, Helen, of East Jordan; four children, James (Irma) Sturgell of Centennial, Colo., Brian (Mimi) Sturgell of Kiawah Island, S.C., Bruce Sturgell of Dimondale, Mich., and Mary Jo Skop of East Jordan; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Shepard, of East Jordan; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Bruce's wife, Evelyn Sturgell.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at East Jordan United Methodist Church in East Jordan. The Rev. Craig Pahl will officiate. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery in East Jordan.
Memorail contributions may be given to Grandvue Medical Care Facility, 1728 S. Peninsula Road, East Jordan, MI 49727. The famiily was served by the Penzien Funeral Home Inc. in East Jordan.
