Kenneth Jack Timmer
August 16, 1936 ~ October 20, 2020 (age 84)
Kenneth Jack Timmer, 84, of Petoskey and formerly of Muskegon, died Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
He was born on August 16, 1936, in Muskegon, Michigan, the son of John Henry and Edna Bell (Pekelder) Timmer. He was proceeded in death by his loving sisters, Kathlyn (Kit) Hulbert and Marva June Schrieber. He grew up in Muskegon and graduated from Muskegon High School. After graduation, he served three years in the United States Navy as a Machinist Mate and serviced on the U.S.S. Currituck.
He married Marjorie Chanda on August 16, 1958, in East Jordan, Michigan.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he enrolled in Muskegon Business College, now known as Baker College, and graduated with a Business Administration Degree. In 1984, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Grand Valley State University.
He worked in sales service for the Anaconda Wire & Cable Company until they moved out of the area. After that, he attended and graduated from the police academy.
He was employed as a police officer for 32 years in Muskegon Township until his retirement in 1994. After retiring, he served as a Muskegon Township trustee, board member of the Reeths Puffer Board of Education, President of the Northside Lions Club and was a Deacon, Elder and Sunday School teacher at Unity Reformed Church in Norton Shores.
During his time off, he enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, playing golf, camping with his family and friends and spending some winters in Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie F. Timmer of Petoskey; two sons, Tim (Carol) Timmer of East Jordan and Tom Timmer of South Lyon. Six grandchildren, Timothy Timmer II of Charlevoix, Megan (Dylan) Alan of Oakland Park, FL, Benjamin Timmer of South Lyon, Kathryn Timmer of Hermosa Beach, CA, Brianna and Sydney Timmer of Ypsilanti; and one great granddaughter, Amy Timmer of Boyne City.
His kindness and gentle spirit extended beyond his immediate family to foster loving friendships. When you met Ken, his humbleness made people feel instantly comfortable. He was often referred to as “Dad” by many neighbors and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2020, at 2:00 P.M. at the Lighthouse Missionary Church, East Jordan. Rev. Bart Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, East Jordan. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time.
