Walter P. Goebel, Sr., 100, of East Jordan, died Saturday, November 6, 2021, at Mallard Cove in Petoskey.
He was born on September 15, 1921, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Walter and Catherine Ann (Wenderling) Goebel.
His family moved to East Jordan when he was 15 years old to purchase the Goebel farm. He graduated from East Jordan High School in 1939. After graduating, Walter worked in an A&P grocery store in Detroit where he met Dolores M. Sheridan. They were married on October 25, 1941, at St. James Evangelical Church in Detroit. Walter managed the A&P store before leaving Detroit to move to East Jordan in 1942.
In East Jordan, Walter worked as the manufacturing operations manager at Gulf & Western, now known as Dura. He retired in 1984, after 30 years.
Walter and Dolores enjoyed vacationing in the winter in Zephyrhills, Florida for 20 years. She preceded him in death on April 25, 2015.
He loved spending time with his family, singing and gardening. Each year, he looked forward to sharing Gods bounty from his garden.
Walter was an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Jordan. He was very active in the East Jordan community. In earlier days, Walter was very involved with the Community Chest, an organization devoted to helping those in need. Later, he was instrumental with the formation of the East Jordan Family Health Center and the local food pantry, Care and Share.
Walter is survived by a daughter, Patty R. (Roger) Sutton of Apache Junction, Arizona; two sons, Robert S. (Barbara) Goebel of Bay Harbor, Michigan and Scottsdale, Arizona and Timothy J. (Peggy) Goebel of Williamsburg, Michigan; son-in-law, Dale Everett of East Jordan; fifteen grandchildren, Tracee (Ryan) Shelden of Long Beach, California, Nichole (Matt) Imel of East Jordan, Jennifer (Brian) Banfield of East Jordan, Joe (Dan) Goebel of San Diego, California, Stephen (Pete) Goebel of Henderson, Nevada, Koryne E. Goebel of Petoskey, Trina (Toby) McFarland of Petoskey, Barbara (Corey) Schroeder of East Jordan, Jamie (Jayson) Moblo of East Jordan, Robert (Heather) Everett of Whitehall, Nathan Goebel of Traverse City, Britney Goebel of Traverse City, Matt (Rhonda) Sutton of Masa, Arizona, Nick (Katie) Sutton of Phoenix, Arizona and Katy (Ryan) Dodd of Gilbert, Arizona; twenty-two great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. Walter was also preceded in death by his parents; son and daughter-in-law, Walter "Butch", Jr. and Marilyn J. Goebel; daughter, Catherine Everett of East Jordan; and grandson, Walter P. Goebel, III.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at 1:00 P.M. at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Jordan. Rev. Matt Deames will officiate with interment following at Sunset Hill Cemetery in East Jordan.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in East Jordan.
