Bernice H. (Olson) Carey
June 9, 1925 ~ May 3, 2022 (age 96)
Bernice H. Carey, 96, of East Jordan, was called home by her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan.
She was born on June 9, 1925, in Port Huron, the daughter of Ole and Vera Belle (Barr) Olson. On June 21, 1944, in East Jordan, she married Mercer H. Carey. They came to East Jordan in 1946.
Bernice was an Elder for the Community of Christ in East Jordan, previously known as Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints. She was a member of the Portside Historical Society. She was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Chapter Alpine #98, 96th Infantry Division Association Auxiliary and Military Order of Purple Heart Auxiliary.
Mercer preceded her in death on January 5, 2002. She married Gates C. Carey, Mercer’s brother, on November 9, 2002, in East Jordan. Gates preceded her in death on November 8, 2013.
Bernice is survived by five children, Donna Drenth, Mercer “Bud” L. Carey, George M. Carey, Marty (Debbie) Carey, all of East Jordan, Darlene (Larry) Haywood of Interlachen, Florida; two step-children, Bruce A. (Eileen) Carey and Pamela Grace (Ted) Bonner both of Sun City, Arizona; 25 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one brother, Jerry (Carol) Olson of East Jordan; one brother-in-law, Dan Faust of East Jordan; one sister-in-law, Janet Olson of East Jordan; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one infant son, Edward Carey; one great granddaughter, Ashlee Carey; her parents; two sisters, Thelma McKinnon and Hilda Lou Faust; three brothers, Ray Olson, Harry Olson and Walter Olson; one son-in-law, Dave Drenth; three daughters-in-law, Sue Carey, Mary Jane Carey and Ginny Carey; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Olson, Shirley Olson and Veronica “Ronnie” Olson; and one brother-in-law, Richard McKinnon.
The Carey family would like to thank all those individuals at Grandvue Medical Care Facility who cared for Mom over the years.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in East Jordan, MI. Evangelist Matthew Kinsinger of the Community of Christ Church in Gaylord will officiate. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, East Jordan, MI.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in East Jordan, MI. Memorials may be given to Park of the Pines, c/o 5679 Exodus Drive, Traverse City, MI 49684.
